I WAS very late for school that morning, and I was terribly afraid of being scolded, especially as Monsieur Hamel had told us that he should examine us on participles, and I did not know the first thing about them. For a moment I thought of staying away from school and wandering about the fields. It was such a warm, lovely day. I could hear the blackbirds whistling on the edge of the wood, and in the Rippert field, behind the sawmill, the Prussians going through their drill. All that was much more tempting to me than the rules concerning participles; but I had the strength to resist, and I ran as fast as I could to school.
As I passed the mayor’s office, I saw that there were people gathered about the little board on which notices were posted. For two years all our bad news had come from that board—battles lost, conscriptions, orders from headquarters; and I thought without stopping:
“What can it be now?”
Then, as I ran across the square, Wachter the blacksmith, who stood there with his apprentice, reading the placard[布告], called out to me:
“Don’t hurry so, my boy; you’ll get to your school soon enough!”
I thought that he was making fun of me, and I ran into Monsieur Hamel’s little yard all out of breath.

Just to give you an idea, professionals like journalists, fiction authors, health magazine writers, and medical scribes all write for money in order to earn a living. The pay scale certainly varies depending on what branch of writing you go into. As most people already know, successful fiction writers and screenwriters tend to make the largest incomes. However, not everyone has an interest in this type of work. Fortunately in this day and age people are writing for money even from home.

Research is the key if you plan on writing for income. By researching different employers, you can determine what standard rates are and what kind of pay you can earn over time. Naturally wages that do not even add up to minimum wage are a waste of your time. This is especially true if you have a college degree. On the bright side, there are real employers out there that do pay writers reasonable wages for SEO work and copywriting online. Most of these professionals will hire writers on a contract basis and present them with a set of guidelines to follow. “If the pace of innovation continues like it has over the past five years, we can expect to see significant improvements in [instrument accuracy, ease of use, sustainability, flexibility, resolution, speed and throughput] over the next five years,” says Jeff Mazzeo, biopharmaceutical business director at Waters Corp.
Instrumentation characteristics that were considered high-end just a few years ago are now becoming common tools used by life science researchers. Technologies like TOF, UHPLC, triple-quadrupole mass spectrometers and detectors with improved quantum efficiencies are now routinely available from various instrumentation suppliers.

We’ve borrowed the best Mexican flavors and ingredients for this quick scramble. Poblano peppers can vary widely, but in general they have a medium level of spiciness. If you can’t find them, green bell peppers can be substituted; to replace the heat of the poblanos, add a minced jalapeno pepper. Make it a Meal: For supper, serve with a side of black beans; for brunch, with eggs and corn tortillas.

The beta version of MSN’s competitor to Google’s Maps includes aerial photos and multiple searches.
The struggle for search supremacy continues, with billions of dollars in online ad revenue the prize for the company that can get the most market share.
MSN Virtual Earth debuted quietly over the weekend in beta form. Plans for the service were announced earlier this year in the wake of Google’s own map debut.
One feature in MSN Virtual Earth lets the user install a “Location Finder,” which will display their current location as determined by using Wi-Fi technology. Wi-Fi must be active on the computer for this to be used.
Virtual Earth allows for What and Where searches. Combining the two lets one find a business in a particular location. If a location is not specified, Virtual Earth filters results based on the current map view, or by the computer’s location if the Location Finder is in use.
Search results return a list on the left side of the screen, and as pushpins appearing on the map. Performing a new search minimizes the results of the first search, but its pushpins remain on the map while ones for the new search appear. Up to three sets of results can be stacked on the side of the screen.
The Tools menu includes an option called Scratch Pad. This tool lets users place a search result in the pad for reference later. When one clicks on a search result, a popup appears with more information. In that popup, clicking on Add to Scratch Pad places the result there.
From the Scratch Pad, the result can be emailed to someone, or blogged to an existing MSN Spaces blog. Also, Virtual Earth includes a Permalink button, where the state of the current window can be converted into a single URL that can be bookmarked for future reference or shared with others.

Mine disaster remembered
AN air raid siren sounded across Wrexham for two minutes to mark yesterday’s 75th anniversary of the Gresford Colliery disaster.
At the same time, a service took place at the Gresford Memorial to remember the 266 men who died in the tragedy.
Albert Rowlands was a 14-year-old lampboy in 1934 when his father, John, a WW1 decorated hero went down the pit, never to return. A gas explosion killed 263 miners, three rescuers also died.
Yesterday the memories came flooding back as Mr Rowlands, of Wrexham, now 89, stood at the pit memorial to hear a service conducted by Canon David Griffiths. The Fron Choir added the music.
“It was a good service and a good turn out, probably because it had had so much publicity this time,” said Mr Rowlands.
The father-of-five – his eldest son died in a car accident in South Africa 10 years ago – has not attended many memorial services because he has been living abroad. He returned to Wrexham in 1994 because his wife was developing Alzheimer’s. She died 12 months ago last January.
His sharp and keen memory has meant he has been called on many times to recount the events of that fateful day.
Last night Wrexham FC played Luton Town with Llay Welfare Band performing before the kick-off. It had been Wrexham’s fixture 75 years ago against Tranmere which had so many miners “doubling up” and working the Friday to get time off to attend the match later on the Saturday.
Coun Bob Dutton, Deputy Leader of Wrexham Council, said: “The Gresford Disaster is something that communities in Wrexham will never forget and we believe this is a fitting tribute to those men who so tragically lost their lives on that fateful morning.”
A disaster fund at the time raised £566,871/4s/2d to help families of those who died.

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. Once it starts, there is no effective medical therapy, so appendicitis is considered a medical emergency. When treated promptly, most patients recover without difficulty. If treatment is delayed, the appendix can burst, causing infection and even death. Appendicitis is the most common acute surgical emergency of the abdomen. Anyone can get appendicitis, but it occurs most often between the ages of 10 and 30.
The appendix is a narrow tubular pouch that is attached to the intestines. When the appendix is blocked, it becomes inflamed and results in the condition known as appendicitis. If the blockage continues, the inflamed tissue becomes infected with bacteria and begins to die from a lack of blood supply, which finally results in the appendix bursting.
Causes
Appendicitis means inflammation of the appendix. It is thought that appendicitis begins when the opening from the appendix into the cecum becomes blocked. The blockage may be due to a build-up of thick mucus within the appendix or to stool that enters the appendix from the cecum.
The exact cause of appendicitis is not known. However, if faecal matter blocks the lumen of the appendix, the secretions keep collecting and may get infected causing appendicitis.
Symptoms
Appendicitis typically begins with a vague pain in the middle of the abdomen often near the umbilicus (navel or “belly button”). The pain slowly moves to the right lower abdomen (toward the right hip) over 24 hours. In the classic description, abdominal pain is accompanied with nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, and fever. All of these symptoms, however, occur in fewer than half of people who develop appendicitis. More commonly, people with appendicitis often have any combination of these symptoms.
Appendicitis Diagnosis
Your doctor will ask you questions about what symptoms you have, when they started, and what was happening before the pain began. Your doctor will press on your belly to see where the pain is. He or she will take your temperature to see if you have a fever, which is a sign of infection. You also may have blood tests to look for signs of infection.
Treatment
The treatment begins by keeping the patient from eating or drinking anything, even water, in preparation for surgery. An intravenous drip is used to hydrate the patient. Antibiotics given intravenously such as cefuroxime and metronidazole may be administered early to help kill bacteria and thus reduce the spread of infection in the abdomen and postoperative complications in the abdomen or wound. Equivocal cases may become more difficult to assess with antibiotic treatment and benefit from serial examinations. If the stomach is empty (no food in the past six hours) general anaesthesia is usually used. Otherwise, spinal anaesthesia may be used.
In this technique, the surgeon will make a number of small incisions in your abdomen, through which the surgeon will insert a small tube that contains a light and a tiny video camera (a laparoscope).
